“Big Sister/Little Sister” program
This peer mentoring program is designed to assist first year students make a smooth transition to university studies and, at the same time, to foster friendships between students studying the same or similar programs. Each new student is allocated a “big sister” prior to arrival. As far as possible, the pairings are based on the program of study and, depending on the breakdown of students in a particular year, a “little sister” may have two “big sisters” or vice versa. Students are encouraged to make contact before the semester commences, offering the opportunity for new students to ask those all-important questions about university life. Particularly at the start of the year, dinners or other events are organised to bring big and little sisters together but the success of the program stems from a genuine willingness on both sides to get together and offer support.
