Duchesne College Outstanding Alumnae Award – “The Acorn”

The inaugural Duchesne College Outstanding Alumnae Award was announced in 2015. Named “the Acorn”, it is a prestigious award for former residents who have achieved outstanding success in their fields and made exemplary contributions to their communities.

Why the acorn? The acorn is the nut of the oak tree. A symbol strongly associated with Duchesne and our motto. The name “Duchesne” means literally “of the Oak”. The acorn nut usually contains a single seed, but it has the potential to grow into the large Oak tree – a tree known for its strength and longevity. The acorn is a symbol of inspiration for current College residents and it is a reminder of the great potential held within a single seed.

Special Alumnae Awards

Each year the Alumnae Association presents two awards to current Duchesne students.

In March, at the Academic Awards Dinner, we present the “Alumnae Award for Academic Excellence”. This is awarded to the student with the highest GPA for the preceding academic year and who is returning to the College. This award comprises a cheque to the value of $200, an engraved plaque and the honour of the student’s name being engraved on the perpetual shield which hangs in the College.

In October at the College’s annual Valedictory Dinner, the Alumnae Association presents the “Alumnae Valedictory Award”. This is awarded to the valedict who, throughout her time at Duchesne College has made an outstanding contribution to the general life and activities of the College. The recipient will have upheld the motto of the College, “Robur in Luce Veritatis” or, “Strength in the Light of Truth”. The winner of the Award receives a cheque to the value of $200, an engraved plaque and the honour of the student’s name being engraved on the perpetual shield which hangs in the College.

Alumnae funds are used to cover these awards. Future funds will be generated through fundraising activities of the Alumnae. One of the aims of the Alumnae Association is to raise sufficient funds to provide an annual bursary for a student of the College. Donations for these awards are always gratefully accepted. If you would like to make such a donation, please make contact with the College or donate online.
